Pinhole gum rejuvenation is a relatively new dental procedure being offered at Aesthetic Family Dentistry. It is so effective at tackling receding gums that it could literally save your teeth!

Receding gums is an age-related condition that we will all have to contend with at one time or another. It is where the term ‘long in the tooth’ comes from when describing older people. Our gums naturally recede with age but it can also be caused by periodontal disease, genetics, crooked teeth or even aggressive brushing.

If left unchecked, tooth roots can be exposed. This can lead to discomfort and accelerated tooth decay. Roots are not protected by hard enamel so will be subjected to the full range of rigors we regularly put our teeth through. This can lead to infection or worse. If no treatment is sought, it could even cause you to lose teeth!

How pinhole gum rejuvenation can help stop gum recession

Before pinhole gum rejuvenation, the usual treatment for receding gums was a lot of surgery. Gum grafts were often used to address receding gums which involved taking healthy tissue from elsewhere in the mouth and suturing it to replace tissue lost to recession. This was uncomfortable and very involved and a less than ideal procedure.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a very effective alternative to this involved procedure. Instead of cutting and grafting, we can do everything through a pinhole. Like keyhole surgery in general medicine, pinhole gum rejuvenation does the same thing but inside your mouth.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique

Using the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, we can address receding gums without invasive surgery. We use special instruments to create the pinhole. Then working through the pinhole the special tools are used to loosen the gum and pull it back up the tooth covering the root surface. The only incision is tiny. All work is then done inside the gum.

This has obvious benefits. It is much less invasive, involves much less discomfort, far faster healing and offers less chance of infection.

As holistic dentists, the team at Aesthetic Family Dentistry embraces innovations like this. It makes life much easier for the patient, involves less surgery, less medication, faster recovery and much less discomfort. Not only does it provide these advantages to undertaking this procedure, it helps encourage those who would otherwise avoid such a procedure through fear or pain or surgery.

Untreated gum recession can result in tooth loss at worst and periodontal disease at best. Pinhole gum rejuvenation goes a long way to addressing that with a very simple procedure that will work in the majority of cases.

If you would like to see if you are a candidate for pinhole gum rejuvenation, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today to schedule a consultation.

You’re never too old to look your best. You are never too old for many of our orthodontics treatments either. As holistic dentists, we at Aesthetic Family Dentistry in Denville, New Jersey treat patients of all ages and stages of life. We will always say you are never too young or too old to look great!

Many of our orthodontics treatments are suitable for adults of any age. From tooth whitening to dental bonding, veneers or crowns and even Invisalign tooth straightening, age is no barrier to looking and feeling fantastic.

Teeth whitening

Age is not an issue with our safe tooth whitening procedures. As long as you have adult teeth, you can benefit from the new Zoom! In-Office Whitening System. It uses a safe gel that is applied to teeth and then activated using a special light. The light and gel whiten your teeth up to eight shades lighter.

Dental bonding

Dental bonding is the procedure we use to fix chipped or broken teeth to restore that beautiful smile. Using a special dental resin, we can rebuild damaged teeth and restore their original look. It is an ideal treatment for areas of low bite pressure such as front teeth where your smile really counts.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are wafer thin porcelain covers placed over a damaged tooth to bring it back to life again. This is a relatively recent procedure that is quite straightforward to undertake with the minimum of invasion and recovery time. It is also suitable for people of any age.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a new alternative to braces that we use to straighten crooked teeth. There is no upper age limit for Invisalign. In fact, we have patients who have successfully used the treatment who are well into their 80s and love the changes that have been made. The only limitation is the user must be able to place and remove the aligner as it is a very snug fit.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are like veneers only more robust and require a slightly more involved procedure. They are custom made to fit over a tooth and look invisible. They are a long-lasting dental treatment that can cover one or more teeth as required. Dental crowns can last many years depending on your overall oral health.

As you can see, age really is no barrier to getting benefit from cosmetic treatments. If you are healthy, have good oral hygiene and want to smile with confidence again there is absolutely no reason why you cannot!

If you would like to explore your options, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today. We would be happy to advise you on your options. Call us today to schedule a consultation.

Odorous breath is something nobody likes to talk about yet is something some of us cannot avoid. Whether we live with, work with or just know someone with bad breath, smelling it is something that cannot be avoided. Yet the condition itself can easily be avoided.

Bad breath is caused by bacteria in the mouth that feed on food left behind. As they digest debris in the teeth, they give off a gas as a byproduct. It is this gas that causes the smell. There are some medical conditions that also cause bad breath, but we aren’t talking about those here. With a good oral hygiene regimen, regular visits to the dentist and using some of these foods in the diet, bad breath really could be a thing of the past.

1. Apples

An apple a day helps keep the dentist at bay as well as the doctor. Polyphenols in apples help break down bacteria in the mouth which has a positive effect on breath. They are also effective at cleaning the teeth and collecting debris that bacteria would otherwise feed on.

2. Fresh herbs

Herbs such as mint, parsley and basil all contain strong oils that have positive health benefits, including fighting the bacteria that cause bad breath. They taste pretty good too.

3. Ginger

Ginger is widely known as beneficial to digestion but it also helps neutralize bad breath. A small piece of fresh ginger eaten after a meal not only tastes great but also helps keep bad breath at bay.

4. Green tea

Green tea is popular for all sorts of reasons and the ability to banish bad breath is one of them. Like apples, green tea contains polyphenols which are known to tackle mouth bacteria. There are also links to the prevention of tooth decay too.

5. Water

One of the primary causes of bad breath is the lack of saliva in the mouth, or dry mouth. Having a glass of water after a meal has some very far reaching health benefits, the ability to fight bad breath is just one of them.

6. Vitamin C

Foods containing vitamin C such as broccoli and oranges as they create a hostile environment for bacteria within the mouth. A balance has to be struck to not make the mouth too acidic after eating, but an orange after a meal can certainly help.

7. Natural yogurt

Natural yoghurt not only lowers the pH level of the mouth after eating but has probiotic properties too. We know these are good for us as they help promote growth of ‘good’ bacteria which fights the bad, bacteria and breath!

8. Milk

Milk and certain dairy products are thought effective at fighting garlic breath after curries or strong garlic flavored food. Sulfur-like compounds within garlic are broken down by dairy, which is why this is on our list.

9. Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds are used in Asia to clean out the mouth, generate saliva and fight bad breath. The oil within the seeds has antibacterial properties which fight the bacteria that cause bad breath.

10. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is widely used in both Eastern and Western cultures because of various health benefits and a delicious taste. It also has compounds that actively break down the gas that causes bad breath.

As holistic dentists, we believe in a complete approach to oral health and wellness. Introducing any of these foods into your diet is a good thing regardless of whether you’re fighting bad breath or not.

If you’re looking for a holistic dentist in New Jersey, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry for a consultation. We are here to help!

Most of the popular media coverage around Botox is one-dimensional. It concentrates on celebrity, frozen faces and extremes in treatments that do not reflect the reality very much at all. In fact, in the right hands, Botox is a very effective anti-ageing treatment that can have far-reaching physical and psychological effects.

With that in mind, we have put together these five facts about Botox.

What is Botox?

Botox is made from Botulinum Toxin Type A, one of 7 proteins (A-G) derived from Botulism. It was first used for therapeutic purposes in the 1960s as a muscle relaxant to treat uncontrolled blinking. It is now licensed in over 85 countries and has over 20 therapeutic uses.

How does it help fight ageing?

By relaxing muscles, Botox helps reduce wrinkles and soften lines. It also reduces the formation of skin lines by relaxing the muscles that cause them. All without reducing facial expression or causing frozen faces!

The procedure is safe and almost undetectable when performed by a qualified practitioner. Here at Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we are qualified and experienced in administering Botox with hundreds of successful procedures behind us.

Botox is safe

In the right hands, Botox is perfectly safe. While it may be derived from a virus, it is one of the safest drugs licensed by the FDA and has been for almost 15 years. A commentator once said, the average American would have to remortgage their house to buy enough Botox to be fatal.

There are over 6 million Botox treatments undertaken each year in America alone. There have also been more than 4,000 research papers published on the product. All indicate that performed correctly, Botox treatments pose no health risk to patients.

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, you might have thought whitening procedures were out of the question. Fortunately, new technology makes them as accessible to everyone. Aesthetic Family Dentistry of Denville, New Jersey offer one such treatment, Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening.

One of the downsides of tooth whitening is the sensitivity that often accompanies the treatment. Even if you don’t already have sensitive teeth, this can cause discomfort for quite a while. With Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening, cases of sensitivity after a treatment is very rare. When it does occur, it usually disappears within a day or two.

Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening

So what is Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening and how does it work? It is professional system utilized by your dentist and involves a preparation treatment and then the application of the Zoom! Light. In all, the treatment lasts around an hour and involves minimal discomfort.

Taking a few simple steps the weeks before treatment will help to reduce discomfort. Custom trays will be made for you ahead of the Zoom appointment so you will have relief gel to use after treatment. We also give you a prescription strength tooth paste to use prior.

The day of whitening we begin by preparing for the treatment. Teeth will need to be clean and then a special preparation is applied to the teeth to help whiten them. We then apply the Zoom! light to the prepared teeth to do the whitening. Once the lighting part of the procedure is complete, we then perform a fluoride treatment to finish.

The procedure is painless. Many patients fall asleep during the treatment while it is also possible to listen to music or just lay back and relax.

Tooth whitening for sensitive teeth

What makes the Zoom! system so effective for those with sensitive teeth already is the inclusion of desensitizing agents within the treatment. This lowers the feedback from the teeth, which significantly reduces discomfort in those with very sensitive teeth. It can even remove discomfort altogether in many cases.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening is as safe a procedure as it is possible to have. Extensive research has been conducted on the safety and efficacy of tooth whitening and the overwhelming evidence is that as long as the dental practitioner is skilled and experienced, there are no substantial health risks associated with the treatment.

We have performed hundreds of treatments since introducing it and have had no serious complications from recipients. Tooth sensitivity is a risk with any tooth whitening procedure but the Zoom! system has the lowest risk of it that we know of. Fewer than half a percent of patients suffer sensitivity after a treatment.

Results will vary depending on your health, the condition of your teeth and lifestyle. Typically, a treatment will whiten teeth by several shades and can last months. Longevity is something we can discuss in more detail at a consultation once we have inspected your teeth.

If you’re considering tooth whitening, contact the experts at Aesthetic Family Dentistry today for a consultation!

Cosmetic dentistry concerns itself with many dental procedures that affect the appearance of your mouth and your teeth. Our teeth are an important aspect of our appearance and have a huge influence over how happy or confident we feel.

Americans have long understood how important a nice smile is, which is why we put so much emphasis on having one. Not only does it look good and show good health, it also has far reaching psychological benefits too. Confidence in our appearance has a massive impact on how we interact with others. That’s true of both our business and personal lives, so can influence every aspect of our existence.

As holistic dentists, we here at Aesthetic Family Dentistry are concerned with more than your mouth. We concern ourselves with your entire wellbeing. That’s why we offer both Botox and Juvéderm as complementary treatments. What better way to complement a fantastic smile than with a little youthful restoration?

Botox

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment that has changed how we look forever. Administered properly, Botox can smooth lines and wrinkles and provide young looking, wrinkle-free skin in hours. It achieves this by relaxing the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles.

Depending on the patient, the effects of Botox can last for several months with the first application. Successive treatments last gradually longer. It’s no wonder it’s so popular!

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is a facial treatment that helps restore a youthful complexion by smoothing the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It is a dermal filler approved by the FDA and is very effective as what it does. When applied by a suitably qualified physician, it can work wonders!

Juvéderm is made with hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the body. It’s a moisturizer that also firms the skin, keeping it smooth and supple. Administered correctly, a single treatment of Juvéderm can provide months of young looking skin.

Our very own Dr. Fine is qualified to administer both Botox and Juvéderm in a safe, clinical environment.

We appreciate that these solutions can complement the positive effects of your smile. They provide a means to regain self-confidence that can offer a new lease of life. Both of which improve your overall wellbeing, which is the primary goal of holistic dentistry. That’s the reason we promote them.

If you would like to complement your smile with fewer wrinkles and you live in Morristown or Morris Plains contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry for a consultation!

Cosmetic dentistry, or aesthetic dentistry as we like to call it is exceptionally popular for all the right reasons. It isn’t just about the look or the Hollywood smile. It’s more than skin deep and not as shallow as detractors would have you believe. A nice smile has far reaching physical and mental benefits for all of us.

There are many reasons why you might want cosmetic dentistry. It is used to make your smile whiter, brighter and straighter but it’s also used for reconstruction. It is often used after an accident, incident or to recover from a particular medical condition. There is much more to cosmetic dentistry than meets the eye.

Popular types of cosmetic dentistry include:

1. Teeth whitening
2. Veneers
3. Invisalign
4. Dental bonding
5. Crowns

Let’s take a quick look at each.

Teeth whitening

There are many reasons why your teeth may discolor. They could be lifestyle such as smoking or drinking a lot of coffee. They could be medical, as some conditions and medications cause discoloration. They could be age related. Teeth whitening is an exceptionally popular and simple procedure.

Veneers

Veneers are porcelain covers that are placed over teeth. They can cover broken teeth, stains, crowding, reshape teeth or to fill gaps. It’s another very straightforward procedure that has far reaching positive effects.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a very effective method of straightening teeth and replaces those metal braces you used to see as a kid. They are almost invisible and involve a lot less discomfort than those old braces too!

Dental bonding

Dental bonding is another effective cosmetic dentistry technique that allows your dentist to correct minor defects such as a chip or gap. It’s another straightforward procedure that can make a vast difference to your smile.

Crowns

A crown is a dental device that covers a tooth to fill a gap where a missing tooth might have been. It can also cover cracks, chips and discolorations too. It is an alternative to a dental implant and can complete an otherwise perfect smile. It’s a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure thanks to its speed and effectiveness.

We know that a healthy smile makes for a healthy person. Having good oral health and a smile that you’re proud of has physical and mental benefits far beyond the teeth themselves. It promotes self-confidence, comfort within oneself and can completely change how you act in public.

For those reasons alone, we recommend cosmetic dentistry to anyone who can benefit from it!

Choosing the right dentist can often be enough to overcome anxiety about regular checkups or receiving essential treatment. Sometimes that isn’t enough. Occasionally, anxiety is so strong that it prevents patients from seeking the treatment they need. That’s where sedation dentistry comes in.

Sedation dentistry, used in conjunction with the right dentist can be the perfect combination for dealing with anxiety and even overcoming it.

So who can benefit from sedation dentistry? Almost anyone who has enough anxiety about visiting the dentist that would otherwise prevent them from seeking treatment. It isn’t something we would prescribe on a whim, but something we would certainly prescribe for the right person and the right circumstances.

There are levels to sedation dentistry. Some people are only mildly anxious so might need only a tiny amount of sedation to get them through. Others with higher levels of anxiety may need more sedating. Others who only have a fear of longer or more involved procedures may just need sedation for those particular procedures.

Sedation dentistry is prescribed to the patient, not for particular procedures. There is no hard and fast rule. We discuss all options with you before undergoing any kind of treatment and will only undertake sedation dentistry with your full agreement.

Sedation dentistry can be beneficial if:

You would typically avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety

You would rather not be aware of a procedure as it’s happening

You need to undertake a prolonged or complicated procedure and are anxious enough about it to consider not having it done

You are anxious about a particular aspect of a treatment such as needles, drills or other tool

You have tried addressing the anxiety itself without success

As holistic dentists, Aesthetic Family Dentistry is naturally concerned with the mental aspect of any part of our dental treatment. Anything that lowers your anxiety about a treatment is a good thing as far as we are concerned. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry as part of our package of dental treatments.

As long as the reasons are sound and it will help you cope better with dental treatment and you are physically capable of undergoing sedation dentistry, you may be a candidate. We would discuss all your options with you at your consultation as there may be alternative solutions open to you as well.

Everyone has a right to good dentistry and good oral health. Sedation dentistry is just one of many methods to achieve that.

If you would like to know more about sedation dentistry, and live in Denville, Dover, Morristown, Morris Plains, Mountain Lakes, Randolph, Rockaway contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry for free consultation!

Holistic dentistry is well known for taking a “whole body approach” to treatments, but what exactly does that mean? What does our mouth have to do with other bodily functions? What does holistic dentistry have to offer that traditional dentistry doesn’t?

First and foremost, holistic dentists are highly skilled dentists in the traditional sense. We are all extensively trained, very experienced and experts in all aspects of traditional dentistry. Additionally, we use materials and techniques that treat other aspects that are linked to oral health and your whole body.

Mercury and metals

Mercury was once used almost universally as a filling material for teeth. Despite being one of the most toxic metals in existence, it was used extensively in fillings. One aspect of holistic dentistry is to remove as much mercury as possible from the mouth. Therefore we don’t use anything that is as harmful to the body as mercury.

One philosophy of holistic dentistry is to use bio-compatible materials. These are materials that, specifically to you, are either benign or beneficial to the body as a whole. So instead of using mercury in a filling, we use safe materials that achieve the same goal but with less risk.

Fluoride

Fluoride has been a big part of dentistry for years and is still touted as beneficial to all of us. With fluoride in the water and fluoride in toothpaste, it is entirely possible we are getting too much of what may not be a good thing. Too much fluoride can have side effects we would rather avoid, so are hesitant to recommend adding it to anything.

Therefore, a holistic dentist would recommend a high quality toothpaste that doesn’t contain extra fluoride. It will still keep your teeth clean, just without the addition of an extra chemical.

Medications

Medication is also a big part of modern dentistry. Indeed, we couldn’t achieve half of what we do without them. However, the type and volume of drugs we prescribe can have a drastic effect on the body as a whole as well as your recovery.

Wherever possible, holistic dentistry is very selective about the type of medications prescribed. All medications cause some kind of imbalance within the body. Keeping that imbalance to a minimum while ensuring patients are comfortable and receiving the same quality of treatment and recovery is our prime goal.

Complementary therapies

One important benefit of holistic dentistry is the inclusion of complementary therapies in our treatments. They can include homeopathy, osteopathy, acupuncture and other treatments to help you cope with discomfort or to aid recovery.

Many dental issues have far-reaching challenges for the entire body, so it’s logical that taking a whole body approach to dentistry is the only way to address it. Making sure that approach is as natural as possible while still providing the quality of care you deserve is why we love our profession so much!
