Did you know that a misaligned jaw or bite can cause head, neck and shoulder pain?

Did also you know that it affects millions of American each and every day? Finally, did you know that this situation is easily treatable if diagnosed correctly? If you didn’t know those things, this post is for you.

Aesthetic Family Dentistry sees a number of issues where a misaligned jaw or bad bite (malocclusion) causes seemingly unrelated discomfort. As holistic dentists, we are well versed in treating the body as a single organism rather than a series of isolated systems. That’s good news if you’re suffering with head, neck or shoulder pain as it can be caused by dental issues and we are perfectly placed to deal with them.

Common causes of head, neck and shoulder pain

Some common dental causes of head, neck and shoulder pain can include the misaligned jaw or bad bite we mentioned earlier. It can also be caused by TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder. Despite having some serious symptoms, these causes can have relatively simple, non-surgical treatments. All of which we can provide.

Your head is supported by a series of muscles in your head, neck, jaw and shoulders. They all work in concert to keep your head upright and mobile. If one of these muscles isn’t working properly, head, neck and shoulder pain can result. Jaw tension is a common cause of this, as is a misaligned jaw or malocclusion.

When a muscle is in use, it contracts to apply pressure in the desired direction. If you’re tense, your muscles can stay in that contracted position. This can disrupt your posture and the normal movement of the body. Also, when your jaw contracts, it pulls other muscles in the neck, head and shoulder. It can also cause the atlas and axis bones in the neck to move out of alignment, which can also contribute to the discomfort.

You other muscles will compensate to try to balance that tense or misaligned jaw. This can either tire them out quickly or move your spine out of alignment. Both of which can contribute to your discomfort.

All of these things can have a disruptive effect on your body, resulting in discomfort, difficulty chewing, poor sleep and a range of other symptoms. Here at Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we have a selection of non-invasive treatments for head, neck and shoulder pain. With the proper diagnosis and treatment, we can address the discomfort and restore your quality of life.

Why not schedule an appointment at Aesthetic Family Dentistry today? We’re here to help!

We all suffer from toothache at some point in our lives. In the majority of cases it’s an isolated incident that needs no dentist intervention. In a few cases, you may need to visit the dentist. Dental emergencies are something different. They are usually a serious issue that either causes discomfort, problems eating, talking, drinking or all of the above.

This post is all about giving you the information you need to understand toothaches and dental emergencies. We hope it helps.

Toothache

Toothache can be caused by many conditions such as something stuck between teeth, tooth decay, cracked teeth, loose or broken fillings, receding gums, periapical abscess, periodontal abscess, ulcers, sinusitis, TMJ and many more conditions.

With the exception of having something stuck between your teeth, all these situations need expert diagnosis. Many causes will have quick and painless treatments that can remedy the symptoms fast. Occasionally, the cause of the toothache may be more complex. It’s something we would discuss with you at the time.

Dental Emergencies

There are many kinds of dental emergency, from a lost tooth, lost fillings, broken brace, abscess or soft tissue injuries. Whether it is regarded as a true emergency or not depends on how severe it is and how it is impacting your life. If the effects are severe, we would definitely recommend scheduling an emergency appointment with Aesthetic Family Dentistry. It is far better to overreact than to not react in time.

We regard dental emergencies as:

Severe bleeding or damage to the mouth

Severe discomfort that stops you doing anything else

A lost or damaged tooth that will not stop bleeding

Sudden swellings in the mouth that can often be accompanied by bad odors

An accident that causes significant discomfort to any region of the jaw or mouth

Many dental emergencies feel or look worse than they actually are. While swift action is important, there is usually no need to panic, to visit the ER or anything of that nature. Simply call us, schedule the appointment and speak to us about immediate care. We can advise what to do over the phone to help contain the situation until you can get to us.

We usually reserve time between scheduled appointments to be able to manage dental emergencies should they arise. It is important to contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry as soon as the situation arises so we can ensure we can see you in time. Once you’re here, we can assess and treat the situation as necessary.

Whatever has caused your dental emergency, you’re in safe hands with Aesthetic Family Dentistry!

Bruxism is the medical term for the clenching or grinding of the teeth. Mild bruxism usually has no long lasting health implications, but more serious bruxism can lead to excessive teeth wearing and migraine. It’s a potentially debilitating condition with a relatively simple cure.

Why do we grind our teeth?

Grinding teeth is an unconscious muscle movement that most of us aren’t even aware we do. It can be triggered by stress or anxiety and can occur during the day or at night. Grinding teeth during sleep is sometimes referred to as Sleep Bruxism. Obstructive sleep Apnea and narrowed airways can cause grinding.

How will I know if I grind my teeth?

As we tend to grind unconsciously or while asleep, many of us never even know we do it. However, if you find you’re getting more headaches than usual or your dentist’s remarks that your teeth are wearing abnormally, bruxism may be the cause. Your dentist will probably discuss it with you at the time.

If you sleep with someone, they may also alert you to the fact you grind your teeth. It may be tempting to ignore them but we would not advise that. Considering the condition is easy to identify and address, we think it’s well worth investigating further.

Is teeth grinding really harmful?

Bruxism is linked to headaches and migraine and causing excessive tooth wear. Both can cause medical complications so should not be ignored if you’re suffering from them. Left untreated, teeth can become loose and constant headaches can be debilitating.

What treatments are available for bruxism?

The most effective treatment for the symptoms of bruxism is an occlusal splint; a plastic mouth guard that is molded to your moth to provide a comfortable, close fit. This appliance will keep your teeth apart to prevent wear and may realign the teeth if it needs to.

Treatment should also address the cause of teeth grinding as well as the symptoms. This is usually attributed to stress or anxiety. As holistic dentists, Aesthetic Family Dentistry is perfectly placed to address this through relaxation techniques such as massage. Being able to identify and address the source of the stress or anxiety will help eliminate bruxism for good.

Millions of Americans grind their teeth. Our lives are becoming faster paced, busier and more stressful all the time. While it may be the way things are going, that’s no reason to not address the situation if it should arise. If you need help treating bruxism, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today!
