Here at Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we use a specialist medical laser for a range of procedures. It is a very safe and targeted tool in improving oral health and tackling specific conditions. One such condition is the apthous ulcer, or canker sore.

Apthous ulcers are a common condition that affects up to a quarter of all Americans. The sores can be uncomfortable and cause problems with eating and drinking. They can last a while too which is why we are offering a fast, effective treatment for them.

Apthous ulcers

An apthous ulcer is a recurrent ulcer that keeps coming back no matter what you try to do to prevent it. They appear in the mouth, usually around the loose tissue of the palate (roof of the mouth), inner cheek or inside the lips. They are small, less than 1cm in diameter and usually have a red halo around the outside.

While minor, apthous ulcers can expose nerves to the outside, causing discomfort whenever you open or move your mouth. This has an obvious effect on eating, drinking and even talking. The specific cause of apthous ulcers is still unknown but we think it is linked to poor diet, stress, acidic food, trauma or sensitivities to certain chemicals.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment has proven very effective at tackling apthous ulcers. Often referred to as ‘biomodulation’, laser treatment is able to suppress certain conditions and is now a widely practiced medical procedure. One that Aesthetic Family Dentistry is also pleased to offer.

By applying a special medical-grade laser to the apthous ulcer, we can treat the virus that causes the ulcer. Relief is immediate and the ulcer will disappear in around 48-72 hours. Better still, once treated, reoccurrence is much less frequent.

Laser treatment for apthous ulcers only takes a couple of minutes, is completely painless and needs no anesthesia. Recovery is almost instantaneous. We can also treat the ulcer in the formative stages, when it is tingling rather than already apparent so can stop it appearing altogether. As you can imagine, it is a very popular procedure!

This treatment is often covered by your medical insurance too. If not, it is very affordable considering how effective it is.

Laser treatment for apthous ulcers is just the kind of treatment we as holistic dentists favor. It is fast, effective, painless and is very targeted without harming the body. Recovery is fast and it needs no sedation or medication. It fulfills most of our criteria for a very effective treatment. If feedback from our patients is anything to go by, it works well too!

If you suffer from recurring canker sores or would like to know more about laser treatment for apthous ulcers, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today.

Root sensitivity is a form of tooth sensitivity that can cause periodic discomfort when exposed to cold air, hot or cold drinks or foods, or when brushing teeth. It is a very common situation, one with some very effective treatments.

The tooth is made up of two parts, the crown and the root. The crown is the part of the tooth you see and is made up of tooth enamel, dentin in the middle and then pulp in the center. The root is below the gumline and is also made up of three layers, cementum on the outside, dentin in the middle and pulp in the center.

Dentin consists of tiny fluid-filled tubes that usually have a mineral deposit on the end to protect it. The tubes have nerves within them. The mineral at the end of the tubes is covered by tooth enamel or cementum. These layers protect the tooth and prevents those nerves being exposed. When those tubes are exposed you get that momentary discomfort associated with tooth sensitivity.

How root sensitivity is caused

There are a few ways to bring on sensitive teeth. Surface sensitivity is most commonly caused by abrasion. This is where the protective enamel layer is worn away and exposes the softer dentin. Abrasion can be caused by brushing your teeth too hard, a harsh toothpaste, some tooth whitening toothpastes, wear and tear and a poor oral health regimen.

All are preventable.

Root sensitivity is often caused by erosion. Erosion can be as a result of grinding the teeth, clenching the jaw, gum disease or excessively chewing gum or tapping teeth. These habits can cause the bone in the jaw to recede and expose the cementum underneath. This then wears quickly as it is nowhere near as strong as tooth enamel.

Just like the crown of the tooth, the dentin underneath has tubes that can become exposed to the outside world, producing root sensitivity.

Treatment of root sensitivity

Aesthetic Family Dentistry has a range of treatments available for root sensitivity. Treatments can be as simple as using a softer toothbrush, prescribing a different, non-abrasive toothpaste or a special toothpaste designed to address sensitivity. These toothpastes are designed to replace that missing mineral “cap” at the end of the tubes in your dentin and can be very effective.

While root sensitivity can have a debilitating effect, the discomfort is usually very short lived. However, it isn’t a situation you should leave untreated as it will likely get progressively worse. Aesthetic Family Dentistry are experts in treating tooth sensitivity. Come see us today and we’ll take care of it together!

Did you know that a misaligned jaw or bite can cause head, neck and shoulder pain?

Did also you know that it affects millions of American each and every day? Finally, did you know that this situation is easily treatable if diagnosed correctly? If you didn’t know those things, this post is for you.

Aesthetic Family Dentistry sees a number of issues where a misaligned jaw or bad bite (malocclusion) causes seemingly unrelated discomfort. As holistic dentists, we are well versed in treating the body as a single organism rather than a series of isolated systems. That’s good news if you’re suffering with head, neck or shoulder pain as it can be caused by dental issues and we are perfectly placed to deal with them.

Common causes of head, neck and shoulder pain

Some common dental causes of head, neck and shoulder pain can include the misaligned jaw or bad bite we mentioned earlier. It can also be caused by TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder. Despite having some serious symptoms, these causes can have relatively simple, non-surgical treatments. All of which we can provide.

Your head is supported by a series of muscles in your head, neck, jaw and shoulders. They all work in concert to keep your head upright and mobile. If one of these muscles isn’t working properly, head, neck and shoulder pain can result. Jaw tension is a common cause of this, as is a misaligned jaw or malocclusion.

When a muscle is in use, it contracts to apply pressure in the desired direction. If you’re tense, your muscles can stay in that contracted position. This can disrupt your posture and the normal movement of the body. Also, when your jaw contracts, it pulls other muscles in the neck, head and shoulder. It can also cause the atlas and axis bones in the neck to move out of alignment, which can also contribute to the discomfort.

You other muscles will compensate to try to balance that tense or misaligned jaw. This can either tire them out quickly or move your spine out of alignment. Both of which can contribute to your discomfort.

All of these things can have a disruptive effect on your body, resulting in discomfort, difficulty chewing, poor sleep and a range of other symptoms. Here at Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we have a selection of non-invasive treatments for head, neck and shoulder pain. With the proper diagnosis and treatment, we can address the discomfort and restore your quality of life.

Why not schedule an appointment at Aesthetic Family Dentistry today? We’re here to help!

We all suffer from toothache at some point in our lives. In the majority of cases it’s an isolated incident that needs no dentist intervention. In a few cases, you may need to visit the dentist. Dental emergencies are something different. They are usually a serious issue that either causes discomfort, problems eating, talking, drinking or all of the above.

This post is all about giving you the information you need to understand toothaches and dental emergencies. We hope it helps.

Toothache

Toothache can be caused by many conditions such as something stuck between teeth, tooth decay, cracked teeth, loose or broken fillings, receding gums, periapical abscess, periodontal abscess, ulcers, sinusitis, TMJ and many more conditions.

With the exception of having something stuck between your teeth, all these situations need expert diagnosis. Many causes will have quick and painless treatments that can remedy the symptoms fast. Occasionally, the cause of the toothache may be more complex. It’s something we would discuss with you at the time.

Dental Emergencies

There are many kinds of dental emergency, from a lost tooth, lost fillings, broken brace, abscess or soft tissue injuries. Whether it is regarded as a true emergency or not depends on how severe it is and how it is impacting your life. If the effects are severe, we would definitely recommend scheduling an emergency appointment with Aesthetic Family Dentistry. It is far better to overreact than to not react in time.

We regard dental emergencies as:

Severe bleeding or damage to the mouth

Severe discomfort that stops you doing anything else

A lost or damaged tooth that will not stop bleeding

Sudden swellings in the mouth that can often be accompanied by bad odors

An accident that causes significant discomfort to any region of the jaw or mouth

Many dental emergencies feel or look worse than they actually are. While swift action is important, there is usually no need to panic, to visit the ER or anything of that nature. Simply call us, schedule the appointment and speak to us about immediate care. We can advise what to do over the phone to help contain the situation until you can get to us.

We usually reserve time between scheduled appointments to be able to manage dental emergencies should they arise. It is important to contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry as soon as the situation arises so we can ensure we can see you in time. Once you’re here, we can assess and treat the situation as necessary.

Whatever has caused your dental emergency, you’re in safe hands with Aesthetic Family Dentistry!

Sensitive teeth can make activities such as eating, brushing, flossing and even breathing an uncomfortable experience. It’s an experience that causes discomfort in millions of people across the country but is something that can be very effectively treated.

What causes sensitive teeth?

The main causes of sensitive teeth are worn tooth enamel or exposed tooth roots. They can also be caused by cavities, damaged teeth or very occasionally, a side effect of something else.

Lifestyle factors can contribute to tooth sensitivity such as diet, oral health or medication. Brushing twice daily, flossing daily, limiting your intake of sugar, acidic foods and fat and visiting your dentist regularly are all good ways to avoid sensitive teeth.

What do I do if I have sensitive teeth?

If your teeth become sensitive, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as you can. We can quickly identify the cause and prescribe an effective treatment. In most cases, that’s just prescribing a desensitizing toothpaste, but occasionally, more work may be required.

As the causes are so varied, it’s best to get a professional opinion as early as possible. If it’s nothing serious, your mind is set at ease early on. If work is required, we can address the situation before it gets any worse. If there are underlying causes that need treatment, the earlier we can treat you, the less serious that treatment is likely to be.

How are sensitive teeth treated?

The specific treatment of sensitive teeth depends on the cause. In the majority of cases, a specialist toothpaste designed for sensitivity is prescribed or suggested to address the discomfort. This is often enough to treat the condition.

If the cause is being caused by damaged teeth, worn enamel or exposed tooth roots, we have a range of procedures that can quickly and effectively deal with them. We use a range of treatments from dental sealants to veneers to treat the causes of sensitive teeth. The exact treatment depends entirely on the cause.

How to avoid getting sensitive teeth

Avoiding tooth sensitivity is the same as avoiding many oral health challenges. Brush twice a day, floss daily and make sure your diet is as healthy and as varied as you can make it. Restrict fatty and sugary foods as much as you can and watch acidic foods too.

Finally, keep visiting your dentist regularly so we can identify any potential sensitivity issues early on.

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorders are caused by problems with the jawbone, joint or muscles that surround the jaw. The correct term is TMD, or Temporomandibular disorders but are often referred to as TMJ.

The temporomandibular joint acts as the hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull. The joint is flexible, allowing movement of the jaw. This movement is controlled by muscles surrounding the joint.

Common symptoms of TMJ

Problems with any of these elements can cause a range of symptoms and some of them can be easily mistaken for other issues. That’s why it’s so important to consult a qualified dentist with experience in dealing with TMJ if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms.

Headache

The majority of patients who experience TMJ symptoms complain of headaches and Migraine headaches to be specific. Many also experience discomfort in the face. This discomfort can often be increased while eating, talking or generally moving the jaw.

Earache

The temporomandibular joint is just under the ear, so it is common to experience earache. This discomfort often manifests just in front of or below the ear. If the ear is checked and no infection or other cause is found, a check for TMJ is often useful.

Discomfort in muscles

An ache or discomfort in the muscles around the jaw, neck or shoulders can also be a symptom of TMJ. If no other causes of this can be identified and you experience other symptoms described here, it is worth consulting a dentist.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus or ringing in the ear is another symptom of TMJ. While not painful, it can be irritating. This is another symptom that can indicate TMJ if no other cause if found. Occasionally, the ear may feel “full” for no reason. This can also be a symptom of TMJ.

Jaw locking or clicking

Experiencing jaw locking or clicking while you move it can be a symptom of TMJ if accompanied by discomfort. If the clicking is painless, it is likely not TMJ. However, if you’re not sure and you have experience it for a while, it’s worth consulting a dentist with experience in diagnosing the condition.

As you can see, many of the most common symptoms of TMJ can also be similar to other things. That’s one of the reasons why correctly diagnosing TMJ can be so problematic and why it’s so important to consult a dentist with experience diagnosing and treating temporomandibular joint disorder.

If you think you may be suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder and would like a professional diagnosis, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today!

We service patients from Denville, Dover, Morristown, Morris Plains, Mountain Lakes, Randolph, Rockaway and all surrounding towns in NJ.

Neuromuscular dentistry is the area of dentistry that concerns itself with your jaw and the musculature that allows you to sleep, chew, smile, speak, sing, kiss or swallow. It addresses the misalignment of the jaw at the Temporomandibular joint and uses a range of treatments to manage it.

Often referred to as Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, TMD or TMJ, problems in this joint can manifest in a variety of ways.

What is TMJ?

Chewing is such an important aspect of your continued well being that our brain automatically corrects the lower jaw position to provide for efficient chewing. This is true even if the correction causes us pain. This process can contribute to TMJ and is what neuromuscular dentistry is designed to address.

TMJ has a number of symptoms which are also indicators of a range of issues. This can make correct diagnosis of TMJ problematic. That’s why you should see a TMJ specialist if you think you may be suffering from the condition. The Doctors at Aesthetic Family Dentistry are experts in the field of TMJ.

Symptoms of TMJ include; facial pain, migraines, jaw pain, back and neck pain, lockjaw, pain chewing, tension headaches, clenching of the jaw and insomnia. There are many more symptoms, but you get the idea. As you can see, all these symptoms could easily be signs of many other health problems.

How We Identify TMJ

We use technology and experience to correctly identify TMJ as the source of many issues. We use:

Sonography to measure vibration in the joint.

Electromyography (EMG) to measure muscle activity around the jaw.

Kinesiography to analyze muscle and jaw movement.

TENS to relieve pain and help adjust muscle position.

We also use observation, experience and every tool we have to correctly identify TMJ. It’s a long, involved process but we’re very good at what we do.

Treatment of TMJ

Neuromuscular dentistry is used in the treatment of TMJ. Once correctly diagnosed, we use a variety of methods to treat the cause and symptoms of the condition.

Our first task is to reduce pain. We usually achieve this by adjusting your bite with a type of aligner called an orthotic that slightly adjusts the position of your jaw to move it into a more natural and comfortable position. We use Electromyography to identify the best position of the jaw and make a orthotic to fit your mouth perfectly.

Bite adjustment is often enough to address TMJ and using the orthotic can be treatment enough. It may be that you need only wear the orthotic for a few weeks to “train” your body to shift your bite. Sometimes, you may need to wear it long term or permanently. This depends entirely on your musculature and how serious the TMJ is.

Occasionally, further dental procedures such as veneers or orthodontic treatment may be necessary. As neuromuscular dentistry experts, we can identify and discuss these options with you if they become necessary.

Aesthetic Family Dentistry will also provide a range of holistic treatments to complement the medical ones. Those treatments can include the use of chiropractors, physical therapists, neuromuscular massage therapists and acupuncturists. These have proven themselves exceptionally effective at treating discomfort as a result of TMJ.

Aesthetic Family Dentistry has extensive experience in neuromuscular dentistry and the treatment of TMJ. Our success rate is high and our customer satisfaction is exceptional.

If you’re concerned about the condition and think you may have it, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry for a consultation.

TMJ or Temporomandibular joint disorder is a common problem that is caused by a misalignment of the mandible, or jaw bone to the skull. It can cause pain or limited movement within the jaw and have quite an impact on your life.

For such a simple issue, the diagnosis and treatment of it can be tricky. The main challenge for the treatment of TMJ is that the symptoms can also be caused by a number of other issues, so takes time and dedication to diagnose properly.

Symptoms can include; headaches, jaw pain, limited movement within the jaw, stiff jaw, earache, clicking noises when eating or talking and grinding of teeth. These are just a few symptoms of TMJ and as you can see, many of them can have any number of causes. It’s only when you’re experiencing a few of them at once that you would think of a dental problem.

That’s why you should consult your dentist if you’re one of the millions of Americans who suffers from TMJ.

There are a few treatment options for TMJ depending on the prognosis. Some minor TMJ disorders pass in a short time without treatment, but the vast majority will need professional dental intervention to cure effectively.

Aesthetic Family Dentistry are TMJ specialists, experienced in diagnosing and treating all kinds of TMJ disorders. We use a variety of treatments, from custom mouth splints to realign the jaw to physical therapy. Much depends on the severity and the cause of your particular brand of TMJ.

We sometimes suggest chiropractors, massage, physical therapy and acupuncture to treat the symptoms of Temporomandibular joint disorder. Each works in isolation and in concert with the others to deliver a very effective pain relief and TMJ treatment.

The treatment of the cause of TMJ can include mouth orthotics, bite adjustment and other orthodontic procedures. As holistic dentists, we tend to do as little intrusive work as possible to deliver an effective treatment. The less we intrude, the less discomfort you experience and less healing you have to do. Owe never resort to surgery to correct TMJ.

If you’re experiencing what you believe to be symptoms of TMJ, make an appointment with your dentist right away. Alternatively, make an appointment with the experts at Aesthetic Family Dentistry. We’re here to help!

Temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMJ are problems that affect the jaw. These problems usually manifest as pain or limited movement but can become debilitating if left untreated.

If you have TMJ or any kind of pain in your jaw, you’re in good company. Around 1 in 10 people get it at some time of their lives, with 1 in 20 needing a dentist to help alleviate the problem.

As holistic dentists, Aesthetic Family Dentistry is well placed to help with TMJ. As the symptoms of TMJ can be very similar to other problems, it’s best to consult an expert before undergoing any self-medication or TMJ treatment. We can offer advice and design a treatment strategy that helps.

So What Are the Symptoms of TMJ?

As mentioned, the symptoms of TMJ can be very similar to other conditions so it’s advisable to get a professional diagnosis as soon as possible.

Symptoms include:

Pain in the jaw or jaw area

Reduced movement in the jaw

Clicks or noises as the jaw moves when talking or chewing

Teeth grinding

Headache

Earache

Sound sensitivity

Pain and TMJ

Unfortunately, the symptoms of Temporomandibular joint disorders can manifest as pain. This can be local to the jaw, the ear or appear as a headache. Sometimes the headaches can be severe enough to imitate a migraine. While over the counter pain medication can provide temporary relief from these symptoms, only effective treatment of the TMJ itself will cure them.

Clicking or Noises and TMJ

Where the jawbone (mandible) meets the skull, cartilage keeps the bones apart. There is also a cartilage disc inside the joint to add cushioning. When these aren’t working properly, the mandible can hit the skull and make the noises. While in itself this isn’t a problem, it isn’t something we would suggest leaving untreated.

Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Another symptom of TMJ is the grinding and/or clenching of teeth. As you probably also know, grinding can be a symptom of many other things including stress. Again, this isn’t harmful in the short term, but has longer-term ramifications as it can wear down teeth and put more pressure on the jaw.

All of these symptoms can be a sign of Temporomandibular joint disorders or TMJ. They can also be signifiers of other issues, which is why it’s important to seek expert advice. As holistic dentists, we can quickly identify the cause of your jaw problems and prescribe a range of remedies for it. Not all of them require dental procedures.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment with Aesthetic Family Dentistry today. We’ll put you right.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that results in pauses of breathing during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes and can occur several times an hour. At the least, it’s an annoyance that results in poor sleep or an irritated partner. At its worst, it can result in a heart attack or stroke.

The symptoms of sleep apnea include tiredness, depression, fatigue, short temperedness and grinding of the teeth. Many sufferers don’t even know they have sleep apnea. They just know they are excessively tired during the day or are told that they have a problem by partners.

The symptoms can be caused by many things, so it’s important not to ignore them if you’re suffering from regular poor sleep. As you tend to see your dentist more than your medical practitioner, we are perfectly placed to help.

There are three kinds of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea (CSA), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and complex sleep apnea, which is a combination of CSA and OSA. We concentrate on obstructive sleep apnea, as dentists can help diagnose and treat the condition readily.

The obstruction in OSA can be the tongue, which can be caused by removal of teeth, the position of the palate and dental arches, among other things. All of the possible obstruction factors can be quickly identified by a properly skilled dentist.

Diagnosis of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can be diagnosed in several ways. Your medical practitioner can perform tests and use questioning to ascertain whether you suffer from the condition. Dentists can also detect whether you’re vulnerable to it by examining the mouth.

As holistic dentists, we are well qualified to identify sleep apnea and can help manage the condition. We look for signs of teeth grinding, examine your medical history, check for an enlarged tongue, high blood pressure, enlarged tonsils and a selection of other indicators to assess whether you’re suffering from sleep apnea or not.

Checking with a dentist is a great idea if you think you’re suffering from the condition as you generally see your dentist regularly. As long as that dentist is qualified to check for sleep apnea, you’ll be in good hands.

There are a range of treatments available for sufferers of sleep apnea which we will cover in a later post. In the meantime, if you think you have OSA, or are being told you have troubled sleep, make an appointment with Aesthetic Family Dentistry today. We can quickly help identify and diagnose the issue and help with the treatment.
