According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), most Americans over the age of 30 have some level of periodontal disease. Our lifestyle, diet and sugar-rich snacks provide the ideal environment for microorganisms and we are constantly fighting to maintain oral health.

As dentists, we spend a lot of our time treating periodontal disease. We have a few tools in our arsenal, but one unlikely sounding tool is also one of the most effective. A laser. Medical lasers are nothing new. They have been used across medicine for many years but few people realize they can be used in periodontal therapy.

Traditional treatment for periodontal disease

The established treatment for many occurrences of periodontal disease is scaling and root planning. This technique is still used today as it is very effective at treating low level periodontal disease. However, once the pathogen advances beyond the gum line, scaling and root planning become less effective.

Lasers and periodontal therapy

The use of lasers in dentistry is gathering pace. Treatments such as LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) uses special medical-grade lasers to treat soft tissue infections, making it ideal for periodontal therapy.

Benefits of laser periodontal therapy include:

Less invasive than traditional treatments

Less discomfort before and after the procedure

Less recovery time required

Longer-lasting results

Perfectly safe in the right hands

Patients with either gingivitis or periodontitis are ideal candidates for laser therapy. We use the laser to first remove infected tissue and then to cauterize the tissue left behind to prevent further infection. The laser can also reach gum pockets, which is a prime breeding ground for the microorganisms that cause periodontitis.

Lasers remove the need for incisions, sutures and recovery periods. While there may be slight discomfort afterwards, it is many times lower than surgical treatments. The treatment also lasts longer too. Many patients who undergo laser periodontal therapy remain symptom free for up to 5 years.

Recovery is almost instantaneous. You will feel the effects immediately and because the laser cauterizes where it works, you should feel little or no discomfort and will be able to carry on with your day as if nothing had happened. That makes it just the kind of treatment holistic dentists prefer, which is why we offer it at Aesthetic Family Dentistry!

If you would like to know more about laser periodontal therapy or think you might be a candidate for the treatment, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry at 973-627-3617 today.

Around 40 million Americans suffer from some kind of tooth root sensitivity.

It is characterized by a sharp flash of pain when teeth are exposed to heat, cold, acidic or sweet foods and even by cold air. Gone as quickly as it arrives, the pain is uncomfortable and unpleasant. So what causes tooth root sensitivity and what can we do about it?

Causes of tooth root sensitivity

The causes of tooth root sensitivity are many but include:

Brushing teeth too hard

Gum recession

Gingivitis

Periodontal disease

Damaged teeth

Worn teeth

Tooth sensitivity can also appear in the aftermath of some dental procedures but this should pass quickly.

Tooth root sensitivity appears when the protective layer of enamel on a tooth is worn away or damaged, exposing the softer dentin. It can also appear during gum recession as the roots of teeth are exposed. Dentin contains thousands of tiny tubules that right to the center of the tooth where the nerves are. The more these tubules are exposed, the more likely you are to experience tooth root sensitivity.

Treatments for tooth root sensitivity

Treatments for tooth root sensitivity depend entirely on the cause. It could be as simple as using a less abrasive toothpaste or changing your mouthwash. It could also require avoiding overly acidic or sweet foods or adapting your oral health regimen. It may also require intervention from your dentist.

Home interventions to tooth root sensitivity can include:

Changing brand of toothpaste

Using a softer toothbrush

Changing brushing style

Avoiding overly sweet or acidic foods

Using a mouth guard to overcome teeth grinding

In the vast majority of cases, a small change in your lifestyle can overcome tooth root sensitivity. If they don’t, we have a few options at our disposal to help.

Dental interventions can include:

Ozone desensitizing

Bonding, crowns or inlays to repair and protect teeth

Dental sealants

Chao PinholeTM Surgical Technique (PST)

Gum graft

Root canal surgery

Surgical interventions are only considered as a last resort. We would want to try everything else before performing a procedure to address tooth root sensitivity. However, the procedures we can perform are very effective at both tackling sensitivity and the underlying cause of it. The majority of dental treatments are simple and involve very little discomfort. For example, the new Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) has revolutionized the way we treat gum recession!

If you suffer from tooth root sensitivity or are looking for a holistic dentist in Denville, New Jersey, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today. We’re here to help.

We have spoken before about the many advantages of laser dentistry and why we like it. We have also spoken about how flexible a dentist’s laser is as a tool. Today we’re going to talk a little more about the kind of procedures we can perform with this tool.

Laser dentistry allows us to perform a wide range of procedures across all levels of complexity. The sheer power and flexibility of a laser allows us to use it in a variety of ways.

Such as:

Laser dentistry for teeth

Used at a suitably low power, a dental laser can find cavities that might otherwise be difficult to spot. A soft tissue laser can detect the byproducts of tooth decay, giving us a good idea of where to look. It’s a useful way of finding cavities.

Hard tissue lasers can be used to prepare a tooth for a filling too. It can kill bacteria and prepare the site of the filling quickly and easily. Sometimes negating the need for local anesthetic.

Finally, we can seal sensitive areas on the root of a tooth to address sensitive teeth. This is a useful procedure if you’re having trouble with hot and cold sensitivity.

Laser dentistry for gums

A soft tissue dental laser can reshape gum tissue in preparation for restorations. This procedure exposes the healthy tooth structure and is known as crown lengthening. Hard lasers can do the same for the jaw too.

Children with a restricted or tight frenulum (muscle attachments in the mouth) can be treated with a soft tissue laser. The condition is known as “tongue-tied” and refers to limited tongue movement. We can use a laser frenectomy procedure to alleviate this problem and sometimes even address speech impediments.

Laser dentistry for other procedures

Dental lasers also have other useful applications including; viewing teeth and gums in real time, removing benign tumors from gums, palate, lips and insides of the cheek. We can also use a laser to treat cold sores, whiten teeth, regenerate nerves, and trim tissue related to sleep apnea.

Most importantly, we can also use laser dentistry techniques to address TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. It can quickly and painlessly reduce inflammation around the joint of the jaw to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with TMJ.

As you can see, there is a lot a dental laser can achieve in the right hands. As trained, experienced laser dentists, we at Aesthetic Family Dentistry are more than capable of using this tool for your benefit. Contact us today if you would like to know more!

A dental laser is a serious piece of equipment that looks scarier than it is. Even the term laser dentistry can strike fear into nervous patients. There’s no need for any of that. Laser dentistry is safe, effective and a modern way to treat a range of dental issues.

Knowledge is power, so let us discuss laser dentistry a little further.

What is a dental laser?

A dental laser is just that, a laser that is finely tuned specifically for dental use. Think of it as a modern drill. It can do many things our trusty drill can, only quieter, faster and much more effectively.

The laser produces a very focused beam of light that causes a reaction when it hits something. Dentists use this to perform a range of procedures from teeth whitening to removing tissue or performing biopsies.

Does a dental laser hurt?

No. A dental laser is a very effective dentistry tool. In fact, some procedures we used to perform with drills needed anesthetics to help with the discomfort. Performing those same procedures with lasers needs no anesthetic and produces very little discomfort.

As holistic dentists, the fewer drugs we have to use with no ill effects to the patient, the happier we are. That’s why we promote the use of laser dentistry.

Isn’t laser dentistry just a new trendy treatment?

No. We have been using lasers here at Aesthetic family Dentistry for over 25 years. In that time the lasers have improved, our skills have improved and the entire patient experience is now a world away from what it used to be.

Over a quarter of a decade we have refined laser dentistry into an art form. There is less work, less discomfort, less damage to the mouth and a much more exact way to perform our procedures.

Are dental lasers safe?

Yes. In the right hands, with the right training, a dental laser is a precise instrument. As long as you wear protective eyewear while we are working, the dental laser is as safe as it’s possible to be.

Just check the dentist has the correct training and certification for using a dental laser. Lots of experience is useful too!

Laser dentistry is a safe, secure way of having dental work done. It allows you to heal faster, experience less discomfort and provides a range of solutions to oral health challenges. If you’re considering laser dental treatment, ensure your dentist is qualified to practice it.

Contact us today at Aesthetic Family Dentistry if you’re looking for first class laser dental treatments!

Laser dentistry is one of the most exciting advances in our area of medicine for years. It has single-handedly changed the way we perform procedures, improves the patient experience and allows us to do more with less.

As you know by now, as holistic dentists we want to interfere as little as possible with how the body works. Laser dentistry lets us do that. So let’s take a closer look at laser dentistry and what it means for you.

What is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry uses a precision laser instead of a blade or currette in many dental procedures. This lowers discomfort for patients, reduces the need for anesthetics and improves the overall patient experience. We still use other tools for many things, but where possible, we use a laser instead.

The dental laser delivers a narrow beam of light that we control with precision. It can perform many tasks that a dental drill can plus many more. It can remove tissue, take a biopsy, treat gum disease, whiten teeth and sterilize infection among other things making it a very important tool in our arsenal.

How Does a Dental Laser Work?

A dental laser works the same as all other lasers. They deliver focused energy as light. That energy can be finely tuned to deliver a predictable amount of energy into a very precise pattern, making detail work effortless.

The laser can work as a cutting tool, a vaporizer, a heat source of teeth whitening or to cure a filling. Depending on how we set the dental laser, it is capable of many tasks. That’s one of the main reasons we use a laser.

What Are the Main Benefits of Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is much less intrusive than traditional dentistry can be. There are procedures where it replaces a traditional tools completely, making it a much more relaxing patient experience. We often have to use less anesthetic too, which is good news for all of us.

A dental laser is also a precision instrument, meaning in the right hands it can perform surgical tasks quickly and efficiently. Being a precision instrument, we can perform procedures with very little tissue or tooth damage.

Lasers can also reduce bleeding, kill bacteria and control tissue around the site of the procedure. This not only makes the entire experience faster and more comfortable, it can also drastically reduce healing times too. Lasers can replace the use of antibiotics in surgical procedures.

As you can imagine, that fits right in with our philosophy of holistic dentistry!

Are Dental Lasers Safe?

As long as the dentist using the laser is trained and experienced, laser dentistry is perfectly safe. The only real safety procedure, apart from a skilled user are glasses to protect your eyes. The same way we ask you to wear glasses when working in your mouth, we may ask you to wear glasses when using a laser to protect your eyes.

Despite being around since the 1980s, laser dentistry is still regarded as an emerging science and not all dentists are qualified to use them. Considering the benefits of using a laser, we would recommend them wholeheartedly.

If you would like to try laser dentistry, contact Aesthetic Family Dentistry today to schedule a consultation!
