<li><b>Oil Pulling</b>: Oil pulling with organic coconut or sesame oil can be a helpful adjunct to regular brushing. Swish for 10–15 minutes to help detoxify the mouth, reduce harmful bacteria, and support gum health.</li>
<li><b>Flossing</b>: Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth. If traditional floss is uncomfortable or difficult, a water flosser can be a highly effective alternative. <h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">The staff at AFDPA would like to introduce Dr. Joelle Hirschfeld to our practice. She started with us in July and we are more than excited for the skills and knowledge she will be bringing to our practice. We would like to take this opportunity to provide some background on Dr. Joelle Hirschfeld as the newest addition to AFDPA.</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Hirschfeld was raised in Randolph, NJ. She attended The Pennsylvania State University where she graduated with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience. She continued on to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where she earned her Doctorate of Dental Medicine. While at Tufts, she served as a tutor and TA for many courses, traveled to the Dominican Republic for a dental service trip, and started the Tufts Chapter of Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon. Dr. Hirschfeld also received awards in operative dentistry and special needs dentistry.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Following dental school, Dr. Hirschfeld completed a General Practice Residency at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ. During her very busy hospital-based residency program, she treated hundreds of patients for their general dentistry needs as well as dental implants, oral surgical procedures, pediatric dentistry, root canals, esthetic procedures, and oral pathology needs. She had extensive training in management and treatment of patients with severe dental and facial trauma in the emergency room as well as clearance for medical and surgical procedures. She also spent a lot of time in the operating room treating patients with special needs as well as facial trauma surgeries. Dr. Hirschfeld loves to learn and is committed to continue advancing her training through continued education each year in order to provide her patients with the best possible care.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Hirschfeld is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, and New Jersey Dental Association. She also plans to join staff at Morristown Medical Center. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In her free time, Dr. Hirschfeld enjoys working out, checking out the best places to eat, snowboarding, and spending time with her friends and family. Dr. Hirschfeld loves what she does and looks forward to taking care of your dental and overall health!</span></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>One of the most commonly asked questions from patients and providers alike is  – “What’s the difference between the two OraRisk® HPV tests you offer?”  Simply answered: the main difference is the total number of HPV types tested.</h3>
<p class="">The OraRisk® HPV Complete Genotyping test option will analyze the oral rinse specimen for 51 different types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), including high risk, low risk and unknown risk types. If the sample is positive for the presence of HPV, it will then be genotyped to identify which HPV type is present with the associated risk for that type. The complete list of HPV types able to be identified in this assay are:  2a, 6, 11, 16, 18, 26, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84 and 89.</p>
<p class="">The OraRisk® HPV 16/18/HR test on the other hand will look strictly for the presence or absence of HPV type 16 and type 18, in addition to a panel of 12 high risk HPV types.  This panel of 12 high risk HPV types include: 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 &amp; 68. If a sample is positive for one of these 12 types, the assay will not specify which type, but simply state the sample is positive for one or more of the following 12 high-risk HPV types.</p>
<p class="">The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determines the risk associated with each type of HPV in our assays. It is always up to the provider ordering the test, to determine which OraRisk® HPV testing option they would prefer.  Overall, OraRisk® HPV complete genotyping offers a greater number of screened genotypes, and OraRisk® HPV 16/18/HR is focused solely on HPV types with high risk association. Regardless of which testing option is ordered, once the sample is received in our laboratory, the provider will receive results within approximately 3-5 business days.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3>An abfraction is a notch or interruption in the shape of the tooth close to the gum line. These can be caused by bruxism (grinding of the teeth) or brushing too harshly. Brushing can be modified quickly but bruxism takes a little more work. That’s where a Night Guard comes in.</h3>
<p>A Night Guard is like a tooth shield that you wear when you go to sleep. They are technically known as maxillary or mandibular nocturnal para-functional limiting devices, occlusal appliances and orthotics. For the purposes of this post, let’s call them Night Guard.</p>
<h2>Night Guard</h2>
<p>A Night Guard is like a shield that is specially molded to fit your teeth exactly. As the teeth are clenched during the night, they wear on each other, thinning and reducing the protective enamel. If left untreated, the wear will increase, exposing the interior of the teeth and gradually wearing them down. This can lead to an increased level of infection, discomfort and worn teeth.</p>
<p>A Night Guard places itself between upper and lower teeth and acts as a buffer to prevent this wear. It also lowers the risk of abfractions along the gum line.</p>
<p>Teeth that are put under stress can also crack. The wear reduces protective enamel and can provide pockets within the tooth that can play host to bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.</p>
<p>A useful side effect of Night Guard is muscle relaxation. Habitual flexing of the jaw muscles during sleep is interrupted when using a Night Guard. The mouth cannot close fully, keeping the muscle slightly outside its comfort zone where it would normally begin contracting. For some reason, when kept slightly out of position, the flexing stops, reducing muscle fatigue, bone damage and the negative effectives of TMJ.</p>
