Dental implants are often regarded as a new treatment for missing teeth. The truth is that this restoration method has been widely used for over 40 years. The technique and the technology has greatly improved, but the basis upon which it is built is well established.

How long does the dental implant procedure take?

The restoration procedure itself takes only a couple of hours, but the treatment can take up to a year from beginning to end. Once we have installed the implant, it may be necessary to allow the jawbone to heal before adding the crown. This can take anywhere between a couple of months and almost a year.

Can I have dental implants if I grind my teeth?

The grinding of teeth is a very common occurrence and does not necessarily prevent you from having dental implants. Before we begin treatment, we would need to assess how severe the grinding is and tackle the underlying cause of it. As holistic dentists, this is something we are well equipped to handle.

How do I look after dental implants?

Once the restoration is complete, a good oral hygiene program is enough to maintain a dental implant. That means cleaning your teeth twice a day with a good toothbrush and toothpaste and flossing or water-picking. Keep your mouth healthy and your body will do the rest.

Am I eligible for a dental implant?

Suitability for dental implants is assessed on a patient-by-patient basis. However as a general rule, if you have good general health, have no underlying dental issues and have no habits that could impair recovery such as heavy drinking, smoking or drug use, you should be suitable for the restoration.

Do dental implants prevent bone loss?

Preventing bone loss is a primary function of a dental implant. As well as improving your smile and rebuilding confidence, the other benefit is the prevention of bone loss in the jaw. By giving the bone something to do, i.e. hold the implant in place, a dental implant encourages continued bone growth in the area.

How long do dental implants last?

The longevity of any dental treatment depends on your ability to heal, your oral health and how well you look after the implants.
