Invisalign is a state-of-the-art solution to braces. If you’re old enough to remember wire braces, you’re also old enough to have been the butt of jokes, suffer embarrassment from classmates and been too afraid to smile for a good many months. All because you wanted straight teeth.
Invisalign is a clear plastic aligner that replaces the traditional wire brace. It’s so good, even close inspection can miss the fact you’re wearing it. Not only is it easier to live with, an Invisalign aligner is easy to clean, simple to care for and is tailored specifically for your mouth.
Invisalign vs. braces
Traditional braces have several downsides. Apart from the aesthetics which we have covered, they also need affixing to healthy teeth. They can easily trap food and can be uncomfortable too.
Invisalign is none of these things. The aligner can be likened to a gum shield you use for sports. It fits over your teeth and gradually pulls your teeth together to straighten them out.
The specially designed aligner is taken from a mold of your teeth and built to gradually straighten your teeth over a number of months. Change the aligner every couple of weeks and you will see your teeth gradually change position and become straighter.
Invisalign doesn’t need cementing to your healthy teeth like braces. They are practically invisible. They are also removable, meaning you can eat what you like, clean your teeth properly and quickly remove any food debris from the aligner. All things you can’t do with a brace!
Invisalign treatment
Invisalign treatment consists of a consultation at our dental office where we will examine your mouth and discuss your options. If you are suitable for the treatment and want to proceed, further visits will be necessary.
We begin by taking a mold of your mouth and sending it away to the Invisalign lab. They will create a series of aligners that will need to be changed every two weeks. Each will very gradually move your teeth together until they are straight.
A typical course of Invisalign treatment takes between nine to eighteen months. Regular visits to our dental office will be necessary to assess progress and to ensure you’re still completely happy with the treatment. Once treatment is complete, your teeth should stay straight forever.
If you’re considering Invisalign as a treatment, schedule an appointment at our dental surgery for an initial consultation. We’re here to help!
