Sedation dentistry is a very effective method of providing treatment to those who are anxious or scared of visiting the dentist. It enables everyone to benefit from great oral health and modern treatments without the anxiety usually associated with it.
It is estimated that around 30 percent of people actively avoid visiting the dentist out of fear. That fear often has no obvious root cause, but is nonetheless powerful enough to prevent people visiting us on a regular basis. Many would rather deal with discomfort than have the root cause treated because of this anxiety.
What is sedation?
It’s important to know that sedation dentistry isn’t about sending you to sleep only for you to wake up when all the work is done. That’s not how it works. Modern sedation dentistry uses a relaxant to relieve anxiety and relax you enough to be able to receive treatment. There are different levels of sedation depending on the level of anxiety experienced. We always use as little as possible in every situation.
The medications we use put you into a state of complete relaxation. You’re conscious, but not. You’re awake, but will have no anxiety and will recollect little of what went on. It’s better for you to be conscious as you can follow instructions. Being awake and not asleep means you recover faster too.
The effects are difficult to describe, but not unpleasant in any way. It’s like you’re dissociated with what’s going on. You are aware you’re at the dentist, aware that we’re working on your mouth but completely unfazed by it. You will be completely relaxed, but completely conscious, just not able to concentrate on what’s going on.
The medication we use also has mild amnesiac qualities, meaning you will remember being with us and you will remember that you underwent a procedure but will be fuzzy about exactly what went on and completely unaware of any anxiety you would normally have felt.
All sedation dentistry performed at Aesthetic Family Dentistry is performed with a highly qualified, board certified, anesthesiologist who will administer the relaxant and monitor you throughout the procedure to ensure your complete wellbeing throughout your time with us.
We don’t prescribe sedation dentistry to everyone. We only use the technique in the appropriate cases or where otherwise a patient might avoid treatment. It isn’t quite the treatment of last resort, but we prefer not to use it wherever possible. However, if it is necessary to ensure proper oral health, we will use it to the best of our ability.
